Description:
Abstract:
This data set consists of digital data describing vegetation and habitats for the Native American Indian, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal lands of Flathead River Reservation in western Montana for the year 2002. The vegetation-habitats were derived from interpretation of color infrared photography flown at 1:12,000. The Flathead River project is located within the USGS (7.5 minute series) quadrangles (Perma, McDonald, Dixon, Sloan, Fort Connah, East Bay). A customized habitat classification was derived by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, which is based on dominant species.
Purpose:
To provide high resolution mapping of riparian communities of the Flathead River area in western Montana (2002)

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The accuracy of the attributes is dependent on the expertise of the photointerpreter and the processes involved in converting the delineation to digital form. All work conducted by the photointerpreter is double-checked by another photointerpreter. Upon conversion to a digital form, an on-screen comparison with the hard copy data is performed. The accuracy of these data is believed to be high, although no formal assessment was done.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data are inherently polygonal. ArcGIS software is used to create and maintain topological relationships between features. Polygonal features begin and end at the same point, contain no overshoots or undershoots, and contain a single label. Linear features are continuous where appropriate, i.e., dangling arcs are removed if they are not required.
Completeness_Report:
For the cartographic process (photointerpretation), accordance with nationally accepted mapping standards and conventions are followed. For the digital conversion process, conventions and standard check list methodologies in place for the time period were followed.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
For reference points accuracy, the accuracy for the digital data are tested by visual comparison of the source with hard copy maps, and by understanding of the hardware tolerances and processing values reported by the software used in data development. Additional checks on comparison were possible when georeferencing/rectification was done using the USGS maps, which cite National Mapping Accuracy Standard compliance.

Process_Description:
Cartographic Process - After acquiring aerial photography for the project area, stereo pairs were created and packaged according to the project boundaries. Maps for cartographic transformation were generated, using the same aerial photography, through means of rectification and mosaicking. The photos were interpreted using a Bausch and Lomb stereoscope at 10x magnification. Cartographic work was performed using a Zoom Transfer Scope, and magnification varied according to the scale of the source data (photography). All cartographic and photointerpretation processes adhere to National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) standards

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
A customized Vegetation and Habitat classification was derived for this project for a report created by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of Montana, U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Montana Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Montana. The classification is based on dominant species. The system uses a four digit code. The first number is a general code, the second number more specific, and so on. An example - 1000 is forested, 1100 is coniferous forested, 1123 is a ponderosa pine dominated forest.
