Abstract:

Smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora, is the species used most often for salt marsh creation and restoration throughout the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the U.S. From 1991-1993, a list of restored and created saltmarshes was compiled for the Galveston Bay Estuary. Frequently, however, data required to evaluate a created salt marsh and its usage by animals were never originally recorded, were incomplete, or were not readily available with a reasonable search effort. Though this dataset has many empty cells, it is presented in hopes of spurring interest to fill the gaps and to provide researchers with some idea of past activities in their areas and who might help them. The initial aim was to update the inventory every year or two, but lack of funds has made updating an incomplete adventure.

Purpose:

To provide historical information about the restored marshes around the Galveston Bay area and to evaluate and assist future restoration projects.

No formal assessments have been conducted on the accuracy of the attributes. Information was provided by organizations and individuals, which was based on field observations and estimates of size and locations. Due to the subjectivity of the attributes, an estimate of the accuracy can not be given.

No tests were conducted, but each marsh entry was examined for the logical consistency of the location. All other variables were copied from paper datasheets or computer files, and were checked and verified to elimate copying errors.

There are gaps in the data set. No all attributes have values for every point.

Latitude and longitudes were taken from NOAA nautical charts using the smallest scale chart available for each area. Usually this was from a 1:40,000 scale chart; rarely from a 1:20,000 scale chart.

Process_Description:

Site locations were gathered from several sources. NMFS Habitat Conservation Branch wetland mitigation records provided the initial records. Queries of local environmental restoration organizations and companies provided additional records, and queries of wetland scientists provided the rest. As much information about each marsh (location, size, what was planted and how, current status/success of plant growth, and knowledge of animal use) was also asked and recorded. Photographs of the marshes were also gathered or taken to document the process and development of each marsh.
