Title:
Assess Damage to Coral reefs along the Northern coast of Honduras.
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: Digital tabular data
Description:
Abstract:
In Fall of 1998, Hurricane Mitch struck Central America, especially Honduras. The hurricane had multiple and complex impacts on Honduran coral reefs. The "Assess Damage to Coral Reefs" project focuses on the impacts of the coral reefs by measuring three variables - temperature, salinity (conductivity) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). These assessments will allow environmental personnel to deal with the impacts of Hurricane Mitch in the context of environmental changes.
Purpose:
To provide information on Hurricane Mitch's impacts to the corals reefs. To establish monitoring protocols for the coral reefs.

Methodology_Description:
Remotely sensed imagery was obtained for the area, if available. The Optic Stowaway temperature thermographs were installed around Cochino Pequeno at two different depth, 5-m and 21-m. Two SeaBird data loggers with underwater quantum sensor were installed at one site near Cayos Cochinos and one at Roatan. Underwater digital video and still photography were taken for documentation purposes, using a Sony DCR-VX1000 video recorder and a NIKONOS V 35mm camera. Surface salinity and temperature were also measured by research students at the Cayos Biological Reserve. Sea Surface temperature (SST) anomolies were used for ancillary data on coral bleaching. Information from local researchers and residents was obtained about pre and post Hurricane Mitch conditions, as well as hydrological data from gaging stations along the Northern coast of Honduras.
