Title: Modified Habitat Suitability Indices Model
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: model
Description:
Abstract:
This data set consists of modified habitat suitability indices (HSI) models that were initially developed from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A HSI is a numerical index that represents the capacity of a given habitat to support a selected fish or wildlife species. Twelve species were selected for the modeling effort based on data availability and representation of the major coastal environments used by fish and wildlife. Specific life stages were used for some species, because habitat use varies with life stage. Factors were analyzed within a 0.3 square mile grid; factors used in calculating habitat capacity include habitat type, average monthly water salinity, average monthly water temperature, average water depth, and the percent of cell that is land. The modified indices were used in the Habitat Use Model of Louisiana Coastal Area (LCA) Comprehensive Ecosystem Restoration Plan.
Purpose: To provide data and information for the Habitat Use module.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
For each modified model, the same notations from the original model was used. The general approach for the fish/shellfish models was to combine factors into one of three categories: water quality, food, and cover. For the wildlife HSI models, three factors were involved: habitat type of the land in the grid cell, the percent of the cell that is land, and average water depth relative to land surface.
Completeness_Report:
Many factors from the original models were not used, because data were not available. Some suitability factors were modified to reflect conditions of coastal Louisiana and the preferences and tolerances of juveniles. In general, there are limitations on the analyses (due to the lack of information on interspersion, the spatial arrangement of land within the spatial cells.) Also, other key factors for some species were missing. When certain factors were not available, consideration was given as to how it would affect the results.

Process_Description:
The published HSI models for the twelve species were modified in three possible ways. The first way was to reduce the number of factors included; this simplified the model by removing unavailable factors (unavailable due to the size of the grid used.) The second way was to change some of the habitat suitability functions based on expert opinion and interpretation of published field data results. The third way was to change the how the different factors were combined into the single measures of habitat quality for a grid cell. For specific modifications for each of the models, please refer to the LCA Model Plan Appendix C as cited in the identification section. Analyses was applied to the 0.3 square mile grid for each of the basins in the study. Quality-weighted habitat was computed for each cell and then summed to obtain a single value for the entire basin for each of the twelve species. Alternative restoration scenarios calculations were conducted for each species.
