Abstract:

This data set consists of a digitized format of an original map entitled "Vegetation Type of Map of Coastal Louisiana 1968". The original data set was collected through visual field observations by Robert Chabreck (Louisiana Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit, LSU), Ted Joanen (Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission), and A.W. Palmisano (Louisiana State University) The observations were made while flying over the study area (Louisiana Coastal Zone). The flight was along north/south transects spaced 7.5 minutes apart from the Texas state line to the Mississippi state line. Vegetative data were obtained at predetermined stations spaced at 1/4 mile intervals along each transect. This information was recorded manually into field tally sheets and the marsh type delineation lines were produced by freehanding contour lines on a basemap. The resulting map was scanned, rectified using ERDAS Imagine software, and digitized using ESRI ArcInfo 7.x. The water category was taken from the original base map used to generate the zones. The new data set resulted in a digital line coverage delineating vegetative marsh types of the coastal region of the State of Louisiana.

To create a digital copy of the Vegetative Type Map of the Louisiana Coastal Louisiana for 1968.

All zones listed in the legend of the map "Vegetation Type Map of Louisiana Coastal Marshes 1968" were digitized. All water bodies within zonal boundaries that are easily recognizable on the base map were digitized. The fill patterns on the map covered a great deal of the smaller water bodies, therefore open water category represents mainly large water bodies. Rivers were not included.
