Metadata Standards Information

Many data citations, metadata protocols, and content standards exist. This section of the SDMS presents information on the format or content standards for metadata on this server. The list below provides access to web sites featuring either graphical examples of the organization of the citation, or discussions about the actual content standards for the NII, the FGDC / NSDI, the NBII, and Government Information Locator Service (GILS).

    • NII NII standards
      Information on the National Information Infrastructure and its activities. The NII does not have one standard but is an initative towards information standardization and gaining access to information using the Internet.

    • FGDC Graphical representation of the FGDC Standard
      from the Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata, 8 June 1994 by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC).

    • NBII Graphical representation of the NBII Standard
      from the Draft Content Standards for National Biological Information Infrastructure Metadata, December 1995 by the National Biological Service (NBS). NBII standard is additional categories built on the FGDC standard.

    • GILS Government Information Locator Service (GILS) Information
      Details on national initiatives on international information standardizations by GILS. A description of the actual entries in a GILS metadata file are found online in the document Guidelines for the Preparations of GILS Core Entries.
